What is an OB-GYN?
An OB-GYN is a medical professional who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology, which refers to care related to pregnancy and female reproductive health. They typically focus on providing medical care specifically related to pregnancy, childbirth and fertility. They may also prevent, diagnose and treat diseases that affect women's health, particularly their reproductive health. Some OB-GYNs may also serve as general care providers for women.
What does an OB-GYN do?
Exact duties for an OB-GYN may vary, especially if they have a particular specialty. However, common responsibilities of an OB-GYN include:
- Advise patients about fertility treatments
- Answer patient questions to address their health concerns
- Complete genetic counseling about fetuses and counseling patients
- Conduct research to assist with medication, procedure or treatment development or testing
- Consult with other health care professionals about best caring for patients
- Deliver babies and oversee delivery planning and procedures
- Discuss family planning options with patients and possibly their patients' partners
- Educate patients, residents and other professionals about health and gender concerns
- Explain procedures or treatment options to patients
- Maintain accurate medical records of patients' symptoms and treatments
- Monitor patient conditions and recommend changes to treatment when needed
- Order tests and review the results to develop and recommend treatment plans
- Perform certain minor or major surgical procedures
- Perform routine exams or preventative care, such as immunizations, mammograms and pap smears
- Prepare reports and statistics for the government about birth, death and disease
- Prescribe medication, therapy or other care options to prevent or treat diseases, illnesses or injuries
- Provide pre-natal and post-natal care to patients
- Refer patients to other types of medical specialists
- Review patient history to understand potential risks and concerns
- Screen patients for health issues, such as reproductive disorders or sexually transmitted diseases
